Washington-on-the-Brazos celebrating 175th Anniversary!

“The Big Picture” – A reproduction of the famous “Reading of the Texas Declaration of Independence” by artists Charles and Fanny Normann. The image was divided into 72 segments, and numerous local artists were assigned a segment of the image to paint on a 2′ x 3′ panel. The segments are now up for bid. You can own a piece of this historic artwork and support Washington-on-the-Brazos at the same time.

The hand-crafted pecan wood pen engraved with the signature of a “signer” is made of pecan wood taken from the La Bahia Tree.

The seedlings are also from the La Bahia Tree which stands on the banks of the Brazos River in Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.

David, the 2007 Jim Henson Award recipient and Sesame Street alumnus, will of “Billy Goats Gruff & Other Stuff” a family musical puppet variety show open to the public on Saturday, March 26 at 11am. Enjoy popcorn concessions. Laugh, dance, take photos, munch on some popcorn and sing along to his banjo delights! (He’s promised to close with Deep in the Heart of Texas!)

Program rated G for General Audience. (PreK-4 grade appropriate) Run time is 40 minutes including puppet demonstration. Limited folding chairs available; wooden floor seating is provided.

Women of the Frontier Celebrate Women’s History Month and Texas History Month at Barrington Living History Farm March 26-27 from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with the program “True Texas Women.”

As men tamed the Texas frontier, the women and girls of the family often endured difficult and extreme hardships, but their determination earned them the title of “gentle tamers and sun-bonneted helpmates.”

Visit Barrington Farm on this special weekend and hear the sagas of these women’s lives using authentic letters and diary entries, spoken by costumed interpreters. Try your hand at making items necessary for day-to-day living, including spinning, crocheting, quilting, tatting and crafting items that pioneer women would have been proud to display in their homes. See a variety of fashions, jewelry and cosmetics that were just as essential to early Texas women as they are to women today. Learn about the significant aspects of their lives, including courting, marriage, giving birth, motherhood and mourning customs.

Barrington Living History Farm is located at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site off State Highway 105 on FM 1155 between Brenham and Navasota. Barrington is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students, and children six and under are free. State Park Pass holders can get in free. Discount tickets are available to tour Independence Hall and the Star of the Republic Museum.

It’s about what happens when two Oxford under-grads plan to have tea with their sweethearts. A chaperone is required.Unfortunately, Charley’s aunt sends a message that she has been delayed. Horror! What to do, what to do? Ah! Why not have their good friend put on a dress and a wig and pose as the absent aunt? Who’s to know?

All goes well until the real aunt shows up.

Unity Theatre’s first production for 2011!

She gave sold-out concerts for the social elite of New York City, became the talk of the town, earned a cult following, and was a legend in her own mind. She had wealth, social standing, and a burning desire to sing. Unfortunately, she had no talent.

The life of Florence Foster Jenkins is told through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosmé McMoon, who teamed up with her in 1932. Over the next dozen years, their strange partnership caused him to revise his first impression of her and of the very meaning of music itself. As Florence once observed, “People may say I can’t sing, but no one can ever say I didn’t sing!”

South Korean Potters – Texas Size Kiln

Feb 15 – 22

Local potter Doug Peck is hosting eight internationally known South Korean potters for the 13th annual International Macsabal Woodfire Workshop 2011 in Brenham, February 15-22.

This festival originated in Osan, South Korea. Macsabal is the Korean term for a simple utilitarian vessel. The workshop focuses on producing these vessels and firing them in a wood burning kiln.

This is a unique opportunity for the public to view the work of internationally known potters as well as watch demonstrations of pottery being produced and fired in a huge outdoor woodfire kiln. It has taken Doug most of 2010 to construct the large woodfire kiln on his property at the edge of Brenham. Once completed, the kiln will take seven days to fire the pottery. Teams of potters will monitor the fire 24 hours a day to ensure temperatures reach 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. They will use 7 to10 cords of oak, cedar and pine in the process.

Texas Independence! – 175th Anniversary

Feb 26-27

The 175th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence will be commemorated during a free two-day festival February 26-27, 2011 at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.

The festival will be held from 10 am – 5 pm each day. This celebration brings to life the Republic of Texas era at the 293-acre park along the Brazos River, where visitors will be transported back to the time when Texas was a sovereign nation.

Costumed re-enactors and members of the Texas Army, along with skilled craftsmen and talented musicians, will fill the park as Texas commemorates its inception. Statesmen of the era, such as Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Anson Jones, will be on hand to explain to visitors the importance of Texas independence.

At the Visitor’s Center, guests will be able to log onto the Park Association’s new web project, “The Spirit of Independence.” This interactive web site allows teachers and students access to the wealth of information and primary sources available at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. Saturday’s activities include Texian Army day-to-day life interpretations; Anson Jones’ kitchen in use; Lott’s Tavern reenactment; small arms and artillery firing demonstrations; historic crafts demonstrations; craft vendors, musicians; and recreation of key moments that occurred during the Independence Convention.

The Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos will open a new exhibit Independence Day weekend entitled “Fifty-nine for Freedom.” On March 2, 1836, as Santa Anna was approaching San Antonio, the delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos declared, “Our political connection with the Mexican nation has now forever ended, and the people of Texas do now constitute a free and independent republic.” By signing this Declaration, these men were signing their own death warrants, jeopardizing their property and the lives of their families. But who were these men who put their lives of the line? The new exhibit will explore the life and contributions of each delegate. Numerous artifacts and documents owned or created by many of the 59 signers will be on display. The exhibit will open on February 26, in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

On Sunday, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, a direct descendant of Texas Declaration of Independence signer Charles Taylor, will be the keynote speaker at this special commemoration. A contingent of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band will start things off about 1 pm Sunday afternoon at the Tom & Jane Bullock amphitheater. Sam Houston IV and Senator Hutchison will then recognize other descendants of the 59 signers.

The Star of the Republic Museum, the Brazos Valley Arts Council and the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association will unveil a stunning art piece titled “The Big Picture.” Local artists have joined together to paint sections of the Museum’s cornerstone exhibit, “The Reading of the Texas Declaration of Independence” by artists Charles and Fanny Normann. More than a dozen artists have divided the painting into sections, and are recreating the painting on a monumental scale. The finished work will measure approximately 18 x 24 feet, and serve as a backdrop at the amphitheater. “The Big Picture” will be revealed Sunday, February 27, at 2 pm at the park amphitheater.

At 3 pm, a Texas-sized birthday cake will be served to audience members, with the help of the Washington County Historical Society Heritage Belles. The afternoon will conclude with a performance of “The Convention of 1836” by the Navasota Theater Alliance.

All admission fees will be waived during the celebration weekend! Food vendors selling a variety of festival foods will be on site.

The Art in Fiber & Kimono, The Art and Beyond

Fiber, wrapping and enfolding us, decorates our homes, our bodies, our surroundings. The Copper Shade Tree and The Gallery at Round Top will celebrate the beauty of fiber in an international celebration of the medium.

On Feb. 5, Copper Shade Tree will present The Art in Fiber 2011. Also on Feb. 5, The Gallery at Round Top will open its exhibition of Kimono, The Art and Beyond. The collaborative exhibition of works will address the ancient art of Kimono, its embellishment and its evolution through the centuries, while The Art in Fiber’s focus will be the expressive and experimental art of fiber as used in the contemporary world.

“Inspired by Nature: Flower Quilts from the Winedale Quilt Collection”

Winedale Historical Complex announces its annual quilt exhibition, “Inspired by Nature: Flower Quilts from the Winedale Quilt Collection.” The 2011 exhibition showcases sixteen flower quilts from the Winedale Quilt Collection.

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The flower quilts in the exhibition span 150 years of quilt making, providing an opportunity to view and examine a range of floral styles that reflect the changing aesthetic preferences from the early 1800s to 1950. Most of the quilts shown here have never been publicly displayed. Included are the simple floral medallion in a rare crewel embroidered quilt dated 1804; stylized and symmetrical flowers in red and green appliqués from the mid-nineteenth century; naturalistic sprigs of blooms, buds, and stems in crazy quilts; and blossoms appliquéd in the pastel color palette popular during the 1930s and 1940s.

What began almost 30 years ago in Austin, and has since been performed to howling success all over the U.S., finally lands in Brenham, when Unity Theatre serves up a heaping helping of Greater Tuna. Directed by Julia Traber and starring Jon Egging and Joshua Estrada, this Lone Star classic tells the tale of one day in the life of the third smallest town in Texas. There are some 20-odd (and odd they are) characters in this play all played by two game actors who take on the manners, the dress and sometimes the dresses of this host of home-grown grown-ups, youngsters, and oldsters.

It’s all for fun and fun for all — and that’s the mainest thing!

Celebrating July 4th in the Country!

On July 3rd, Chappell Hill’s annual parade will be held, often declared “the best small town parade in America.” It features a smorgasbord of floats, cowboys, antique cars and the renowned Marching Kazoo Band, with festivities beginning at 10am. The Summer Cowboy event celebrating the “Life and legend of V.T. ‘Cowboy’ Williams, Jr.” begins after the parade, and features the Rocking T Chuck Wagon, pony rides and western demonstrations, all at the Chappell Hill Museum. Admission and activities are free.

On July 4th, celebrate our nation’s independence where Texas declared her independence — at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, open from 10am-10pm. Visitors can tour Barrington Living History Farm, Star of the Republic Museum, Independence Hall (regular admission fees apply) and the world-class Visitor’s Center. Activities include arts and crafts, 1800s children’s games, music by Tena Rae Helm and band, and free Blue Bell ice cream treats and Coca-Cola drinks. Bring along a picnic lunch or enjoy a variety of vendor-prepared foods and beverages. When it gets dark (at approx. 9:15pm), enjoy Fireworks-on-the-Brazos presented by H-E-B. The town of Burton will also be celebrating in a big way on July 4. At the Burton Community Center you will find delicious barbecue, an auction, bingo, cake walks and raffle drawings beginning at 11am. Sponsored by American Legion Post 242 and Auxiliary.

Activities in the town of Independence begin in the afternoon with a parade at 5pm, followed by a street dance, food and fun booths and, of course, fireworks!

Festival Hill at Round Top offers several patriotic music programs at 3:30pm and 8pm on July 3 and at 3:30pm on July 4. Enjoy the Annual Round Top Parade and Celebration – activities start at 10am on the Town Square, parade at 10:30 with special guest Gov. Rick Perry, Grand Parade Marshall this year, followed by Bar-B-Q, cold refreshments and music at The Round Top Rifle Association Hall.

Celebrate summer under the stars with “Hot Nights, Cool Tunes” Enjoy cool tunes on these hot summer nights with live concerts around the square in historic downtown Brenham every Saturday in July.

120th Annual Maifest

The 120th Annual Maifest Celebration commemorating local German heritage takes place May 7-8 at Fireman’s Park in Brenham, Texas. Complete with parades, coronations, children’s carnival, German music and dancers, other entertainment, food, crafts, and more, Maifest offers a weekend of fun.

A sparkling Junior Parade featuring the Junior King and Queen kicks off Friday’s activities at 10:30 am, and the Senior King and Queen Parade high-steps its way through the historic downtown district at 10:30 am Saturday. Floats, elaborate fantasy costumes, and enthusiastic children and young people add to the hometown parade atmosphere.

Maifestival takes place Friday evening and all day Saturday with a children’s carnival, festival food and drinks, a German Village and Kinder Village activities, and more. Evening activities include the Junior Coronation Friday at 7:30 pm and the Senior Coronation Saturday at 8 pm.

Enjoy the sunset at the end of a beautiful spring day at Pleasant Hill Winery in Brenham. “Wine Down” on the deck and indulge in a glass of wine and cheeseboards with friends from 3 pm -sunset. Wine Down happens every Friday in May. The winery is located at 1441 Salem Road in Brenham.

Enjoy three days of readings, workshops, conversations on the craft and unique performances for Poetry at Round Top to be held at the 200-plus-acre Round Top Festival Institute April 30-May 2.

Winedale presents The Merchant of Venice on April 30-May 1. One of Shakespeare’s darker comedies, aptly begins, “In sooth, I know not why I am so sad.” The play highlights the conflict of spiritual and material values in the cosmopolitan city of Venice. When a bond is forfeit for lack of payment, religious tensions erupt into a threat of bloody revenge. Meanwhile, three caskets and a dead father’s will determine the fate of a rich young woman and her suitors. Justice and mercy hang in the balance in a courtroom where nothing is as it seems. Light-hearted elements of song and disguise complement this provocative exploration of ethical values.

A Festival of Play at Winedale on May 1 is a celebration of all things spring and Shakespeare. Come out to Winedale to enjoy performances by Shakespeare Outreach participants, Eeyore’s birthday (Winnie-the-Pooh’s favorite donkey), a Maypole, and other fun activities. Winedale Festival of Play performances are noon-2 pm Saturday in the Barn, to be followed 2-4 pm on the Winedale grounds by the annual family-friendly version of Eeyore’s Birthday Party, featuring games, music, and a birthday cake.

If live theatre is more your style, Unity Theatre presents a compact version of the timeless Camelot. In an idyllic kingdom where might is used only for right, King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and Lancelot, a knight of the Round Table, are caught in a love triangle where passion threatens to destroy their dreams. Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is THE place to enjoy the beauty of spring and connect to your inner-Texan! Known as the “Birthplace of Texas,” this is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed by 59 brave men as the Texians battled the Mexican dictator Santa Anna. As this document was being crafted, heroes protecting the Alamo died and General Sam Houston built an army which would eventually defeat Santa Anna in the battle of San Jacinto on April 21 in only 18 minutes. There is so much to see and do while visiting the nearly 300-acre park! Tour the replica of Independence Hall; mosey on down the trail to see where ferries crossed the Brazos River. Downtown Christmas Stroll

December 4 & 5

The sounds and tastes of the season will delight young and old alike during the annual Christmas Stroll and Parade in Downtown Brenham. Enjoy this family weekend beginning Friday, December 4, from 5 pm-10 pm, and Saturday, December 5 from 10 am-5 pm, as the holiday spirit comes to Brenham.

Friday night, enjoy Christmas movies on the square, a Dickens Costume Contest & Stroll, carriage rides and live entertainment. Unique gift items and warming cider and cookies can be found in more than 50 shops, boutiques and restaurants in the historic downtown area.

Saturday morning at 8:30, join the Jingle Bell Stroll 5K that begins downtown. Runners, walkers and leashed pets are welcome.

Edible masterpieces will be on display downtown during the Gingerbread Tour of Homes. Designed as part of the event, decorated gingerbread houses will be auctioned with proceeds benefiting Washington County Habitat for Humanity.

Christmas at the Farmer’s Market returns this year on Saturday from 8 am-5 pm with mouth-watering treats, handmade crafts, and vendors! Finally, the Parade of Lights begins at 6 p.m. Saturday. Join this light-filled old-fashioned parade around the downtown streets, complete with a special appearance from Santa!

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play

December 3 – 20

Unity Theatre presents its Christmas offering, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play beginning December 3.

Giving a twist to the classic holiday movie from 1946, this production will be performed as a radio broadcast. In the days before moon-walks or cyberspace, there was radio and news, music, comedy, drama, and soap operas all came into the home via radio broadcasts. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play will give audiences an opportunity to experience what it might have been like to sit in a radio studio on Christmas Eve in 1946, just after the War, and watch a live “coast-to-coast” broadcast.

A cast of five actors will perform all the characters and create all the sound effects. Charles Sanders, a Unity Theatre veteran, will return to assume the role of Clarence, the Angel Second Class, trying to win his wings by visiting Earth and helping George Bailey, a man so discouraged with life, he wishes he’d never been born. Clarence shows him what the world would have been like without him, and ultimately, convinces him that his is, indeed, a wonderful life.

Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, an additional Saturday matinee at 2:30 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 4 pm. All seats are reserved and tickets are $25. The Nutcracker

Does anything say Christmas more than Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker? For the second year, The Nutcracker will be performed in the incredible Festival Hill Institute Concert Hall – reminescent of the European Concert Halls in Round Top.

This play performed by children for children of all ages spans time and brings the joy of toys and Christmas to the stage. This production is brought to the tiny burg of Round Top by Dancers Workshop and Ovation, Austin.

Celebrate The Holidays

Christmas at Winedale

December 12

Delight in the sights and sounds of an old-fashioned holiday season when you enjoy Christmas at Winedale. This free event will be held Saturday, December 12, from noon-4 pm at Winedale Historical Complex. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Winedale’s historic homes, decorated for a 19th-century Christmas, will be open to tour. All around the grounds there will be folk life demonstrations, including quilt making, weaving, spinning, whittling, blacksmithing and basket weaving. Farm animals will be in the corral, and children can make old-time crafts in the Old Winedale one-room schoolhouse.

You may even see the German Weihnachtsmann, also known as Santa Claus, giving out candy coins. Stagecoach and covered wagon rides will carry you from place to place. Music and other entertainment will also be available. Food and drinks will be available for sale; make this a great family outing to get into the spirit of the season.
